In one of his 1960 "New York Philarmonic Young People's Concerts" Bernstein talks about the Theremin, the Ondes Martenot and the Tape Recorder. They're all new instruments producing new sounds, he says, but the most important is the Tape Recorder. Then he presents a Concerto for Tape-Recorder and Orchestra by Luening and Ussachevsky. What if he had thought that the Theremin was the most important? Maybe we could now have a 1960 video of Clara Rockmore playing at the Carnegie Hall with the New York Philarmonic.
