Concerto per Theremin: the Live CD from Lydia Kavina

Some Curious Facts about the Performances

The Nightingale

The concerts in Castelbianco were presented in an outdoors amphitheater surrounded by many trees and there were lots of birds that kept singing through the whole duration of the concerts. However, their twittering could not be heard during the performance since it was covered by the music. In "The Nightingale" Lydia simulates a singing bird with the Theremin (and she does it incredibly well!) with almost any accompaniment from the piano, so in that moment people in the audience could hear clearly the chirping of the birds and many of them believed that they were answering to the singing of the Theremin. I remember a journalist absolutely thrilled by the illusion of a phenomenon that probably seemed to her almost supernatural!

The Mirror

At the end of this piece you can hear the tolls of a bell. This was completely casual: a few seconds before the end of the piece the bell of a churchtower in a nearby village begun to ring end kept ringing for some time after the sound of the music faded. Lydia remained completely still until the bell stopped while the audience started the applause only after the last ring of the bell.

The Final Improvisation

This piece was played by Lydia on the Theremin and Leonello Tarabella on his Twin Towers. During the day we were visited by some TV crews - RAI (Italy), BBC (U.K.), 3Sat (Germany) and various local stations - but only 3Sat stayed till the end of the concert. They were waiting for this event to happen from 1996 when we announced them a "big telematic event" for the opening of the "first european televillage". Unfortunately, when we actually launched the opening in 1998 there was no telematic performance at all in the program. But 3Sat loved so much the idea that they simulated it! In the 3Sat film you can see a saxophonist in Berlin playing with Lydia and Leonello through videoconference. Very nice, only... it never happened!
